This is most definitively not a “party drug”, and you should make sure that your first couple of times are with an actuall shaman (Preferably in Peru).
However i have done Ayahuasca by myself/w/friends 20+ times, and it is verry much do- able without a shaman,

The pineal gland creates melatonin. Also, ayahuasca means soul vine, it contains at least 3 different chemicals, none which are made in the pineal gland, 2 which aren’t even made in the body of animals at all.

You don’t need big concentrations of psychoactive substance to excite brain. Right chemicals can make you high, sleepy or kill in small doses.
